Always online

The short film, "A social life" shows  how people are addicted to social media and how people undergo social media depression. The  girl here always stay online adding likes, comments , sharing her daily routine and searching for feedback. She is addicted to social media. She begins her day with social media platforms, spend whole day with it and ends her day with it. It seems she has a good job, wants to stay fit and she really works hard but social media obstructs her way, stopping the way to gain real happiness. She gains happiness from social media. Her happiness depends on likes and  comments on Facebook. She shares every minute detail unnecessarily in social media which is bad. At last,  she understands the problem with her life and stop taking the way to misery.

Do we really need social media to stay happy? Not really. Young people think that  social media is  an essential part in their lives.People mock at the ones who do not use social media. Mostly youngsters use Facebook and Instagram and  they post everything they do. Don’t you think that social media ruin your life? The thing is that you are not aware that it is ruining you. It is proved that people spending more time on Facebook have higher depression level  than people who spend less time on Facebook. So, how many hours you spend in Facebook? Are you depressed? Most of the time, people cannot get their eyes from them. They spend hours commenting and sharing what they do. In a program, the inventor of Facebook; Mark Zuckerberg was asked “would you be comfortable sharing with us the name of the hotel you stayed in last night?” and he answered “No” then why would us? Social media indeed waste your time, money , destroy your relationships and even destroy your life. Stop for a moment and think. People are addicted to them. The creators  create those social media in order to addict people. Nowadays, those social media companies  hire individuals called attention engineers and they borrow principles from casino and gambling to make those platforms addictive. In a program, the researchers  discuss the fact that the use of social media and cellphones releases a chemical called dopamine and they highlight that it is the same chemical makes people feel good when smoking, drinking and gambling. So, it is predictable that social media is highly addictive. It creates stress and in other way round people again use social media to cope with stress. Why do you think people use social media? May be to show off, to know what others do and may be someone really searches for happiness. Anyways, one cannot get real happiness through them. Unfortunately, children also get connected with them with the Covid 19 situation and parents worry about their children’s lives. How can  children  manage  it in a world even adults  cannot get rid of them.

The process of Facebook or Instagram is like you add profile picture or posts, others like them and comment. People really feel bad when they do not get any positive feedback. Early morning, they searches for new notifications saying someone liked your photo. You begin to compare yourself with others. Others go to luxury hotels and do everything and you feel like you lack them, beginning to think that you are unlucky. You are mentally depressed at the moment. But it is a social lie. They do not spend time happily as how they look in their posts. They do not show the UNFILTERED truth behind their lives.

I personally do not use Facebook but I do have an Instagram account but I make myself aware that I do not overuse it.On the other hand, one can use these social media platforms to do good to the society. But no one recommends the overuse of social media. Indeed, staying “always online” will ruin your life.

  1. I totally agree with the issue which has been brought out through this post. "Social media depression" is one of the most important topic to be discussed and it is a time's need. Thus, according to my point of view, this short film has contributed to that cause precisely. In fact, as this video depicts too, people are not spending their lives for their own happiness but for the sake of updating every single event in their lives which is PATHETIC! It is like you are praying for God before your meal; whatever you are going to do,first of all you have to upload photos and videos on your Facebook or Instagram pages. Once you addicted to this it is not easy to get rid of the desire of following likes and comments for your posts. Indian "Tik Tok" hospital is one of the unmistakable evidents which shows the danger of social media and "social media depression". Also it derives inferiority complex towards imaginary incidents which conveys through the posts. Indeed, young lovers use to compare their partner or love affair with them which is very impractical. Thus, BE ATTENTIVE ABOUT THE ACT WHICH IS DONE IN FRONT OF A CAMERA BEFORE JUDGING YOUR PARTNER OR AFFAIR!What I wanted to say is that although we maintain a particular role in social media, we should aware of the difference between social life and private life. Once we consider our whole life as social media, from the very moment, we are unable to be us and we are playing the role what society demand us to play. In such circumstances, "social media depression" will be an unavoidable factor in the society.

    1. yes.One can use social media platforms but in an intelligent way. Some people use it to do social services, some earn money through them, some show their creativity and so on. Those people know the limits of it. We can ask ourselves, "Are you passionate about social media or obsessed?" But what is meant to be passionate about social media. One can be passionate about what you gain or achieve through social media. As you mentioned in the comment, people are not spending their lives for their happiness but to show off others that you are happy, but inside you do not have that happiness. What I recommend is that if you are aware that you overuse them, you can leave all behind like in the video. The end part in the video is effective the way bright light comes through the door and it is shown that her life begin to be brighter. I've read comments in that video and most of them commented that after they stopped using social media, their lives began to change.

  2. I agree that the social media can be both ban and boon to life. One of the prominent reasons for youth depression can be the excessive dependency on social media.

  4. This is such an eye-opening piece of writing. Awareness like this is much needed in this globalized era. Even if we know these facts we tend to forget them intentionally or unintentionally. Some reminders like this actually mean a lot because there are people out there who really need to see and hear this.

I certainly agree with your argument that “staying online will ruin your life.” but I also agree that people can fix this habit if they just stop for a moment and think. For instance, I used to check my phone, right after I woke up and I would stay online for an hour or two. But then I realized the negative impact it has on my daily routine and energy level. After much thoughts and forced willpower, I stopped doing that. First, I would keep my phone somewhere far before sleeping, or I would straight away get up without looking at the phone. After some time it worked and I still am continuing that because now it has become a habit.
So I hope whoever reads this also will try their best to fix this negative trait.

  5. The impact of social media is a broad as well as a controversial issue. This may be helpful or it can be even harmful. But today younger generation is totally addicted to social media with the developing technological facilities. So the responsibility of elders and parents is to make aware of their children when they are using social media platforms.Basically the time using for social media should be limited.Unless the addiction lead to social media depression and it will be very pathetic.

  6. It is true that social media in a way is beneficial tool to keep in touch with friends and to communicate and interact with people across the globe. It has become very popular particularly among the teenagers to interact and connect with others online. However, losing your phone is worse than losing your virginity today. We live in a generation where we are so dependent on technology that it is as addictive as a drug . We also live in a generation where it is common to send inappropriate pictures two people who have just met . So the question here is that whether we would like to see our future leaders and future generation acting like this.

Since many people are asked to remain home due to COVID 19 these days, they have turned to social media to maintain their relationships. Even we as students tend to use our phone , laptop almost all the day. But I too feel that social media is not the best way to maintain relationships. Being online does not always show that others really care about you or vice versa. Not only this , the oversharing on social media can be dangerous. It can attack our privacy. Also, overusing leads to spending too much time on social media which can deviate children from their studies. Therefore it is up to us how we use it. Use it wisely!

  7. Social media has its pros and cons. But I see social media as a valuable platform because as students we learn many things from internet.we can gain many advantages from social media. There is a misconception that social media can ruin our life. Social media does not ruin our life , it sometimes brighten our life giving many benefits.

  8. Many of us enjoy staying connected on social media. It helps to stay up to date with the world and people around, particularly with the Covid 19 it has become an invaluable tool. But the social media addiction and excessive use of social media leads to depression and anxiety. Also, the constant alerts and notifications affect our concentration and focus. So when using social media we should keep limitations and use it with a self restrain.
