Who Do You Think You Are?

Love is an intense feeling of deep affection for someone or something that we experience as humans. It has no conditions or limits. Sometimes people enjoy the feeling of love whereas some people suffer due to love. Christina Perri's song 'Jar of Hearts' is an example of the latter; how people suffer due to love. This song is about a girl who is trying to stay away from her lover who wants her back in a relationship. Throughout the song, the heartbroken feelings of a girl are described. The lyrics show that the man once the girl loved has hurt her feelings more than once, and he returns to her again and again. It has affected the feelings of the girl. When she is trying to forget him, he comes again to find her love. The suffering of the girl is obvious in this song. Although this song is about a heartbroken relationship of a girl this can be applicable for boys as well. The melancholic tone of the song implies that still she loves the man. Yet, this time she won't accept him as she has made up her mind and she thinks not from her heart but from her brain.

Personally, for me, the most heart touching verse is that,

" You are gonna catch a cold

From the ice inside your soul

So don't come back for me

Who do you think you are?"

This shows that the girl believes in karma. She does not want to get revenge from him, but she waits for the time to punish him for his bad deeds. She desperately wants him to understand the mistakes he has done. That is why she repeatedly asks the question " Who do you think you are? "

  1. Yes, I agree. The suffering of the girl can be clearly seen through the song. It is really hard to not accept someone you love, yet she is doing it. This song might be an eye opener to anyone who is trying to play with love. As i see, playing with someone else's feelings is the worst thing ever. If only they stop and think about how the other person suffer, because of the things they are doing it would be good.

“And who do you think you are?
    Runnin' 'round leaving scars
    Collecting your jar of hearts
    And tearing love apart”

This verse clearly shows that this boy is not sincere towards her. Maybe he is a player. What is clear is that the song is asking the audience not to do the same thing like him indirectly.

  2. Yes. Through out this song, the heartbroken feelings of the girl can be seen. Although she was cheated by her boyfriend she forgot them because of her love towards him. But the boy played with the love. This time girl does not let her heart to take decisions and she let her brain to decide what should she do. Taking decision from brain is difficult than taking decisions from heart, but this girl hardly let her brain to take decisions. She does not hate her boyfriend. I think she sympathizes to him, because she believes in karma.

  3. 'Love' is a human emotion. It depends on people whether they beautify the world with love or destroy the world. However, as you have mentioned, this song deals with a realization of a girl. Actually, she is not lamenting, but she is in a mood of realization. She doesn't want to punish or take revenge from him, instead, she is waiting until he understands the reality. I think this is the meaning of love. If we love someone we must have that ability to be strong enough to bear up any thing that happens in a relationship wisely, and wishing the other person's success is the best part of love. Taking revenge is not an option for real lovers, and keeping someone by force is also useless. So, the understanding the reality and facing it is the best option.

  4. I also agree that, the speaker of this song can be either a girl or a boy. Because both can be suffered from broken relationships. Faith is the most important in a bond according to this song. Also the words of this song indicate patience is essential though the other party is a true lover or not. However the speaker of this song tries to take a decision from his brain not to believe a person who cheated him. As you mentioned there is no need to revenge. Understanding the reality is best is the indication through this song.

  5. It is always better to forgive and letting go than taking revenge. Because if you forgive and let go the grip of unhealthy thing in your life you are relaxed comfortable and peaceful but clinging into something and going after the revenge you are bothered, tortured and uncomfortable.

  6. After a tough break-up, will you ever go back to the person who begs to reconcile and rekindle the relationship? Regarding the song, I also see it about a person who breaks a lot of hearts.

And who do you think you are?
    Runnin' 'round leaving scars
    Collecting your jar of hearts

A tough heartbreak brings out tough words. The woman is strong enough to rebuke the guy for coming back after all that he did. He may have broken a lot of hearts as he is like collecting them. Admit it, there are some guys who acts like that. They're like womanizers fooling a lot of girls and at the same time it can be vice versa as well. There are girls who fool boys nowadays. But in this song's case, the person may have broke hearts a lot of times.

It will take so long to mend a heart break. The love might not have been lost, but it will take time to reduce the pain. Everytime that one person who cheated you comes into your mind, you will lose the trust on anybody. You will start to think that everyone will cheat you like that. Here in this song too the girl does not allow him to come back into her life may be because of that. Once cheated, though you forgive that person, it will be difficult for you to be with him. I agree with her, that once gone, it is gone and there are no second chances in love. That is what this song depicts as well.
Indeed, the title of this song is actually a metaphor for all the different women that person has dated. So in the end, it seems that at the center of her gripe with him she is perceiving her ex as a womanizer/heartbreaker.
