The concept of social
stratification is merely based on the factors like class, gender, race, and
other major forms of stratification, but the new researchers have found that
there are other pervasive norms that can have a profound influence to determine
societal categorization. For an instance, the attractiveness of an
individual acquires a conceivable disposition within society. This parameter of
physical attractiveness sharply discloses its impact on socioeconomic
inequality where the good-looking figures are highly treated than the less
attractive ones. It is said that attractive people have higher intelligence,
better education, and higher earnings than others and also they attain better
outcomes in their adulthood. In that sense, the role of physical attractiveness
has become a contentious matter which can be unveiled as a consequential
criterion in an individual’s life course.
At academic levels,
better-looking youth of both genders reach better academic achievements in
their transitioning to adulthood. In universities, there can be reflected a
tendency of obtaining higher grades by attractive students. Physical
attractiveness can lead to favorable treatment by the teachers and classmates
when confronting diverse situations in learning, and it can support to
constitute arenas of comfort and contexts of interpersonal relations.
Consequently, the adolescents feel good and secure about themselves and the
advancement of self-esteem or self-confidence strengthens them to meet any
challenges in the domain of school. With that, they are able to succeed in
academic tasks more effectively. Conversely, less attractive learners who lack
such comfort or interpersonal relations are likely to be highly alienated and
unable to complete the academic tasks successfully.
This beauty-bias treatment or
“lookism” can have influential roles in the labor market or industry. According
to an academic review, “Physically attractive individuals are more likely to be
interviewed for jobs and hired, they are more likely to advance rapidly in
their careers through frequent promotions and they earn higher wages than
unattractive individuals.” In some places, the higher degree of attractiveness
is even encompassed in the recruitment policies in the job market. The Chinese
Navy states that “the good- looking people” are an official requirement to join
them in order to represent their nation with a better image.
Psychologists comprehend this physical
attractiveness as a “beauty premium”, and there can be seen a number of reasons
behind the success of the people who are said to be more attractive. Based on
the social conventions, physically attractive people are considered dominant,
more sociable, mentally healthy, sexually warm, skillful, and intelligent. Even
the teachers expect cute kids in their classrooms and especially the college
students obtain more knowledge and information from good-looking teachers. When
it comes to the industry, the good-looking workers can be recognized as more
confident and it influences in increasing their wages. Recent experiments have showcased
that attractiveness raises social and communication skills which can increase
the productivity of the worker or employer. Moreover, the social skills of a
child can be emphasized as a remarkable predictor of lifetime earnings. On political
platforms, better-looking candidates are more successful in elections since voters
are willing to enjoy watching beautiful candidates. Researchers have found that
attractive people get called back for job interviews more often and most of the
time men are likely to engage in unfair negotiations with attractive women. Especially,
these attractive ones are more sought after as romantic partners in
relationships.
When investigating a person’s character, “good look” is one of the major factors that spontaneously come to one’s mind apart from the other inherent features. Have you ever thought that why do we automatically stop at the profile pictures of attractive girls or boys on social media? That is the simple stimulation that physical attractiveness can have towards other people. Generally, these attractive people are said to be very happy than others. Here, the issue is that the criterion of measuring one’s attractiveness since the way that people feel about attractiveness differs from one person to the other. Additionally, one can question whether all the attractive people are successful and whether there are unattractive successful ones in society. Those can be proffered as exceptions regarded to this factor. However, a person’s physical attractiveness can have an influential role in manipulating his or her entire life.
I don't agree with your argument dear, because there are hundreds of famous and exemplary characters in the world who proved that the physical structure cannot define your entire life it's the way that we think of ourselves defines our lives.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I have to say that this argument can be variant depends on the country.
ReplyDeleteFor instance, this concept of “beauty” is not regarded very highly in Sri Lanka. Here, people do not fail an interview just because someone is ugly. Even concepts like school bullying do not exist to a certain point. But in countries like South Korea, people do judge others by their appearance to a very high extent. They even say things like that to someone directly. They bully people just because they are ugly.
Apart from that, I can not agree with this statement “attractive people have higher intelligence. I do not think intelligence has anything to do with attractiveness.
Physical attractivness as you mentioned can have positive impact on one's life but it can be the other way round. There are people whose lives' are destroyed because of their attractiveness. Also, there isn't definition for it since it's not the same for everyone. IT's true that attractive people get attention really quick but in Sri Lanka, they do not hire for good looking people but hire for their skills. I do not agree that attractive people have higher intelligence. Outward appearance has nothing to do with intelligence.
