"Recreation of Sri Lankan history using films and teledramas"

The study of past events can be defined as history. People learn what happened in past using things from the past such as, books, letters, visiting historical places and visiting museums.

When we talk about Sri Lankan history, it is very interesting, because there are lots of interesting stories related to past of Sri Lanka. The love story of prince Gamini and princess Chithra, the fight between king Dutugamunu and king Elara, and the love story of prince Saliya and the poor girl Ashokamala are some interesting stories related to Sri Lankan history. History books, letters, and ancient ruins evidece about these stories.

Today, some films and teledramas are created using historical events, but most of these films and teledramas do not bring out the real historical events which is proven by historians using clear evidences. The story we heard or learnt using books is differ than the story in those films and teledramas. The clear image that people have about the history is changed due to those films and teledramas and people become confused about the history.

The major impact of this process is on students. They have to learn two stories based on the same incident, one from their text books and other from films and teledramas. So, due to the difference between the two stories, the become confused and the become unable to create a clear image about history.

History should be recreated, because people are able to remember something by watching and listening than only reading. The stories which are brought out through the films and teledramas should be similar to the real historical event. People should not change the historical events through these films and teledramas. If the real story and the story in the film or teledrama are not similar, people who watch it become confused.

So, if someone wants to recreate history using films or teledramas they should not change the history. If they can bring out the real story through them, it become helpful to others to learn the history properly.

  1. “History should be recreated”.

Yes. history should be recreated not sugar coated. If they make movies and teledramas just for the viewer ratings or for the earnings, they as sri lankan are doing wrong to the country. Media is something that is watched by kids to the adults and maybe even foreigners. If they change the details about them, how is it different from fraud?

People would constantly get confused by the details, because of these changes. After all not everyone afford to go to the school and learn. Those who have not learned the history from textbooks will think that the dramas and films are true. Thus it is very wrong to recreate history and they should stop it.

  2. I did not like History as a subject in school. I found it very hard to memorise the names, years and places. So,I tried to memorise them using films and teledramas because it is easy to memorise things with visuals and interesting to feel like you were at that time. The problem I experienced is brought out through this post. Most of the time, there are two stories, different to each other for the same situation in the past. The film makers recreate history for their own preferences instead of showing the real story proved through evidences. Thus, when recreating the past situation, one has to precise because it will affect the future of the country.
