Do you suffer from exam stress?

As students in university of Kelaniya, all of us know how we suffer from the exam stress right now , because of the unfortunate postponement of our exams for both first and the second semesters That is because, we all know that we have to study for both semesters at one time. In such a situation, if the administration posts a new notice that the exams will be postponed again, how the students can bear it up. As a result, students tend to be stressed over their exams.

At first, what is stress?

Simply stress stress is a state of physical, mental, or emotional factor that may lead to physical, or mental illness resulting from demanding circumstances. Among them, examination stress can be recognized as one of the major problems of students. Accordingly, exam stress plays a vital role on physical and mental well- being of students, causing negative impacts on academic progress and mental health. Sometimes, students tend to stay alone by even refusing to maintain interpersonal relationships with their family members as well as the external society. Stress may common to almost all the students including school children, college/ university students, or any other academic students.

what are the possible causes for exam stress?

In many cases, exam stress results from pressure and competition from the peer groups, family society, and even the teachers. Probably, a little stress around exam time can be a good thing, as it motivates students to put more effort on their work. But, most of the time, stress level of students goes beyond the limit and it will definitely be a negative influence. Although it is common among students, it becomes a problem when they lack time to prepare and focus. Then, they become poor in their academic performances. Therefore, it leads to major dropouts like mental illness, and suicide attempts among students. Students often feel stressed when preparing for an examination due to the pressure from school and family because of the constant competition and comparison with peer groups and good performers. Most of the parents try to compare their child with other clever students in his or her classroom. I believe that, it will be a huge pressure for students. Because, each student acquire knowledge in diversified levels. Some students may show a good academic success while some others show an average, or a low academic success. It is the common nature, and even scientifically it is proven that the ability to grasp the knowledge is relative to each human being. Then, students should not be given a pressure and should not be criticized by comparing them with others. Because, those criticisms and comparisons make students panic about their exams. Usually, parents force children to study with no relaxation time, and it will surely make students panic, feel neglected, and eventually, they collapse emotionally. Under this pressure, when students are unable to fulfill the expectations of their parents and due to the pressure from the society to be best, they tend to lack their self- confidence, and also start to suffer from depression and other mental problems. On the other hand, the excessive work load make them to be stressed on their exams.

Ultimately, it is obvious that, examinations, which is a part of student's academic life become a burden to some students, when they are not able to manage them. So, I believe that, the educational departments, schools, parents, and even students should come together for a better strategy to gain sustainable academic achievements with no any stress.

  1. I agree with your argument. It is evident that students feel exam stress for a great extent. Every individual tends to be stressed over something most of the time. That is life. If we take exam stress, if we can not help but be stressed about the exams, maybe there is something wrong with our education system. Or maybe every education system gives stress. Or maybe it is the exam system.

Every student must wonder whether we can not archive academic success without examinations. I actually don't know the correct answer to that. But if the ultimate goal is academic excellence, I think examinations are actually useless. Because what the examinations test is the memorization of a student mostly which is useless. Students just study for the sake of exams, just to write something. Only a few try to do it for the long term sake. So I think the examinations are useless which gives students exam stress. I hope one day there will be a better system to archive academic excellence.

  2. "If there were no exams!" "Wow!!" That is actually a great thought. Our parents or teachers would have never forced us to study. Life would be so good in absence of exams. But if there were no exams, we would not have studied. If we didn't study then we would not have got the knowledge of different things. Due to lack of knowledge, we would not be employed in good company .

Thus, examinations are one of the most important phases of life for the students. This help them to make carrier for the life. But due to much causes for the revise, teachers and parents pressure , children often feel stress and frustrated during the examination, which is not good for them. Due to stress and frustration students get tired and sleepy can not study and often get confused. Sometimes they also do suicide. They are not confident enough to answer the paper. After completing the paper they are not sure whether they will pass or fail. This is not good for them. This need to get rid of stress. They can read books, watch TV or take rest for an hour. The parents can help with their children in studies and can erase their stress and frustration. Children mostly feel stress due to too much of studying. They also can make interesting and systematic schedule in which there will be enough time for studies and rest, so that they don't feel stress and can study freely.

  3. I do agree with your argument. As students we continuously study for exams over 13 years in school. That's not the end. Even after schooling we step into the university examination world. Some universities have mid exams and end exams as well. Not only that assignments, presentations, and sometimes quiz programs also make students more stress at the end. According to what I feel the education system is full of examinations. In Sri Lanka the education system is exam oriented. The practical side of the students are totally ignored. As a negative result of that sometimes even a graduate student does not know how to complete a task when they step into work life. They only know the theory part. Therefore it is obvious that there is a issue in this education system. Not only examination stress but also the work life stress is originated in the lives of students after they go into to a job. The mental state indirectly influence on economy as well. Therefore the necessary steps should be taken to reduce stress of students and to make a good economic world in future by changing the education system as education is the heart of a nation.
